Heavy Fruit
Heavy Fruit found its way into the world during the pandemic as a collaboration with my dear ex-wife and songwriting partner, Genevieve Hayton. Genevieve brought some beautiful lyrics to this one, and from the moment it was written, I knew it carried a special kind of soul. I've always imagined recording it one day with an incredible female vocalist to lean into its silky R&B groove.
For now, I wanted to share it with the people who have chosen to be part of Bring It Home and offer you a glimpse of a song that's still growing.
My partner, Rose and I have both recently lost people we love, and this song has taken on an even deeper meaning for me. It reminds me that this life is beautiful because it's temporary. We all have our season. We grow, we love, we leave something behind, and eventually we let go.
One of my favorite lines Genevieve wrote says it perfectly:
"After all we fall, we come loose like sugar tooth... We're not meant to stay. We're heavy fruit."
I hope this song meets you wherever you are and gives you a moment to reflect on the sweetness, impermanence, and the gift of being here while we can.
Angel Dream(Tom Petty)
Tom Petty has always been at the very top of my list of favorite songwriters. Decades ago, a dear friend handed me a double live CD before a road trip. Somewhere along that drive, Angel Dream came on. I couldn't believe I'd never heard it before. I had to pull the car over because it hit me so deeply. From that moment on, it became one of my favorite Tom Petty songs.
With the recent loss of my sweet aunt, and both of my parents gone, this song hits hard. Every time I hear it, or sit down to play it - it brings the goosebumps immediately. There's such a tenderness and hope in these lyrics that reminds me the people we love never really leave us.
It's an honor to share my version of one of my favorite songs with you. I hope it brings you the same comfort, reflection, and peace that it brings me.
Hidden Jam: Candy (Alyeska Tram, Girdwood, Alaska)
I've been really fortunate to tour Alaska almost every year for the past two decades, and it's become one of my favorite places to play music. On one of those trips, we invited our good bud and incredible guitarist Andy Coe to join Flowmotion for a run of shows in Girdwood.
While we were there, the Alyeska Resort asked if we'd be up for a "Tram Jam." They gave Andy and me a gondola all to ourselves, along with a camera, and challenged us to play a song as we climbed more than 2,000 feet above the valley floor!
We chose Candy, a longtime Flowmotion favorite, and spent the ride picking our way through the tune while the Chugach Mountains unfolded around us. It was epic, and a very cool way to show Andy how breathtaking Alaska really is.
I recently rediscovered this little video in the archives and knew it belonged as this month's Hidden Jam. It's not often I get to play Candy with Andy - completely unplugged, and certainly not with a view this. Big thanks to Alyeska Resort for alway treating us to a great time!
