I originally recorded it during my session for Driftless, but it never settled in with the other tracks. The song features Tony Furtado on bottleneck slide. Tony is an award-winning banjo player, a stellar slide guitarist, amazing songwriter, and a sculptor! Legend in my mind:) Fortunately for me, he lives in the PNW, and we’ve bumped elbows here and there over the years. I’ve been a fan of Tony’s for years, so I messaged him to ask if he’d play on this one. I was so floored by what he recorded that I almost didn’t add anything else to the song - just wanted his slide guitar and vocals. It felt so good to hear it that raw and stripped down. Recoded as a full band at Bell Creek Studios during my driftless session, I took Tony’s bottleneck slide part, Aaron Guest’s bass part, and I put the rest together on my own at home. Added some piano, guitars, vocals, and brushed my fingers lightly over the head of a banjo for one of the shaker sounds. Within minutes of me sitting down and showing her the melody and riff, Genevieve started busting out the amazing lyrics. It’s so simple, but the deep lyrics and the powerful message “Who waits for things to change” instantly stick in your mind. The lyrics center around the all too familiar tension and division we’re dealing with as a country and global community.
